The Story So Far

It is rumored that Kaname's parents, two rare pureblood vampires, comitted suicide several years ago leaving a young Kaname an orphan. The suicide rumor is spread and maintained by the vampire council of elders; however, many night class members refuse to believe this. Throughout the entire ordeal Kaname maintains that his parents were murdered and that they did not commit suicide.

When Yuuki awakens in chapter 35 we finally learn the truth behind the death of Kaname's parents in a flashback of Yuuki's memories from ten years ago. Juri and Haruka are revealed as the parents of three childen, Kaname, Yuuki, and another un-named child. While Kaname is allowed out into vampire society, Yuuki is closely guarded by her parents, and even her very existance is not announced. Juri and Haruka hide Yuuki because of the loss of their first child. Little is known about this child except that, based on conversations in the manga, the child was stolen or killed by Rido. Kaname is, in chapter 38, revealed to be an adopted child, meaning Juri and Haruka did not actually give birth to him. This makes Yuuki Juri's only surviving child, as far as we know anyway...

It is also revealed that Haruka and Juri are actually brother and sister; however, marriage between pureblood siblings is common in order to maintain the bloodline.

Shortly after Kaname arrives back at home, Yuuki says that she feels an awful presence and sees eyes staring at her. Haruka and Juri are then shown outside yelling down at Rido, their brother who says he has come to steal their princess. Juri yells that she will never let him take her child away again. Back inside the children can smell the blood of their father, Haruka, and Juri quickly enters the room. Juri kisses Kaname and tells him to take care of Yuuki. Juri then takes a protesting and tearful Yuuki into another room. Using her pureblood powers, Juri seals the vampire side of Yuuki and turns her into a human. This is Juri's final act, because in turning Yuuki into a human she is sacrificed.

After Yuuki awakens the Chairman is seens staring at a picture of himself and Juri. In a former chapter he had also mentioned that he would make "her" wish come true and a flashback of Juri is shown. The full relationship between Juri and the Chairman is not yet known, but from this we can interpret that Juri wanted peace between humans and vampires since that is now the Chairman's mission.

Kuran Juri has yet to appear in the anime version of Vampire Knight.

Name

The kanji and hiragana for her first name (as shown in the image) directly translate to Juri; however Juuri is also an acceptable translation. I do not know (and have not been able to find) the meaning of the name Juri. If anyone knows, please let me know. Kuran means nine orchids.

Relationships

Kuran Haruka

Juri and Haruka are husband and wife and also brother and sister. For vampire purebloods in Vampire Knight, it is actually common for siblings to marry in orer to keep their line pure. Juri and Haruka seem to have a very close and strong relationship. It is obvious that they care about each other from the way in which they are shown together in the manga. The way that they stand together and the glances exchanged between the two, particularly in chapter 38 when Juri is looking down from the balcony, is evidence of their love and respect for each other. In fact, Haruka in chapter 38 refers to Yuuki as "the product of their love". The two lovers die in order to protect their child; however, neither seem sad as they have lived a long life together.

Kuran Kaname

Kaname is Juri's adopted son. The fact that Kaname is adopted is revealed in chapter 38 when he announces that he is in fact the Kuran ancestor, and therefore not Juri's child. Although Juri is not Kaname's biological mother, he calls her mother and treats her in that respect. Juri as well treats Kaname as if her were her true son and child. Juri looks after Kaname and tries to raise him well by exposing him to vampire society and other vampires that she think will be a good influence, such as Takuma. You can tell that she truely loved Kaname based on her concern for his growth and well-being as well as the kindness she expresses towards him. In her last words to Kaname, Juri thanks him and asks him to watch over Yuuki.

Kuran Yuuki

Yuuki is Juri's beloved daughter. Juri and Haruka hid Yuuki from the outside world in order to protect her from Rido who stole their first child. Yuuki is also referred to by Haruka as "the product of our love" which reinforces the importance of Yuuki to her parents. In chapter 38 it is revealved that Juri, even before the attach by Rido, wished to Yuuki to become human. Perhaps so she would not have to fear Rido anymore? Haruka tells Juri before his fight with Rido "That thing you wanted to do for Yuuki.. I think it's a good idea now. Let's give her a different future with our power..." This power to give Yuuki a different life costs Juri's life. Juri made the ultimate sacrifice for her daughter in order to give her what she believed would be a brighter future. In her last words to her daughter, Juri says "I'm glad that I was able to do something for you."

Kuran Rido

Although Rido is Juri's brother, she hates him. Rido stole Juri's first child and attempts to steal Yuuki as well. When Rido appears to take Yuuki away Juri becomes incredibly angry and yells at him "You Bastard! Taking my child away again!". Juri's relationship with Rido prior to him stealing her first child is unknown.

Chairman Kurosu

Juri's relationship with the Chairman is still rather unclear at this point. It is known that the Chairman thinks a lot of Juri since he keeps a picture of her on his desk and she is briefly shown in his memories. It is also revealed that Juri is in fact the source of his pacifism during a discussion with Kaname in chapter 33.
